Mount St. Helena Brewing Co.



Mount St. Helena Brewing Company is an super good find in the little town of Middletown. Sitting in the shadow of the real Mount St. Helena, this brewery offers beers that literally erupt in tightly crafted flavors.

Established in 1996, the brewery has used its over a decade of experience to finely tune each beer on the menu until it is really hard to find even one that is not above average. In addition to being served at the brewery restaurant/pub, Mount St. Helena beers have pretty good distribution in Napa County.

One of the first things you’ll notice (other than the excellent brews) is how friendly the place is. Their goal is to keep the atmosphere family oriented and affordable.

Some beers to look for

English Ale How wonderful to find a session beer with this much taste. Light copper color. Toasty nose. Richly malty up front with fruit in back. Gold medal winner at the California State Fair. ABV 4.1%

IPA Citrus-pine aroma. Moderate malt with lots of floral-evergreen hop taste. Richly layered. Nice. ABV 6.8%

Honey Wheat Ale — Clear light gold color. Slight honeysuckle aroma. Taste is clean and simple with a pleasant bitterness. A warm-weather treat.
ABV 5.5%

Stout — Roasty with a dry finish. Well balanced. Took gold at the California State Fair.

Restaurant and Pub

The Mount St. Helena Brewing restaurant serves up some of the best burgers and pizza around. Restaurant rating websites and blogs give the pizza two thumbs up for creativity, flavor and consistency. The menu is creative and fun.

Good bets: try the Funnel’s Fire Pizza or the BBQ Chicken Salad. Both delicious.

Adjacent to the restaurant is the bar with a few cozy tables and TVs. Each weekday afternoon the Happy Hour features super prices on pints.

The restaurant is in the front of the building.

The brewery is behind the glass wall in the rear of the room.

This side room off the main restaurant is filled with interesting memorabilia.


Brewing its own beer again as of Feb. 2015. Honeywheat, Palisades Pale Ale, IPA, Stout, and two seasonal brews on tap.

Lake County brews erupt with flavor

While not located in a place you will likely pass through unless you are going there, the brewery is well worth the drive over picturesque Mount St. Helena, north on Hwy 29 out of Calistoga. Tours may be arranged upon request, but should be scheduled before you head up to the brewery.
